I sent XDC to an Ethereum (EVM) address by mistake / Why is the XDC address different?
This article explains the address structure of XDC, how it differs from EVM-based addresses, and how to attempt recovery in the D’CENT Wallet if XDC was mistakenly sent to an EVM-based address.
[Why EVM-based addresses are the same]
The cryptocurrency account addresses generated in the D’CENT Wallet are derived from the 24 recovery words (mnemonic code) backed up when the wallet is first set up.
Each coin has its own Coin Type ID, but EVM-based networks such as Ethereum, Polygon, BSC, and Kaia use the same address structure.
Therefore, account addresses on these EVM-based networks share the same format starting with 0x, and the same address is generated in the D’CENT Wallet.
As a result, the same address may appear across different networks, which can cause confusion during transfers.
[Why the XDC address is different]
XDC uses a different address structure from EVM-based networks and is generated based on its own Coin Type ID.
Therefore, when you add an XDC account in the D’CENT Wallet, it will have a different address from EVM-based networks such as Ethereum, BSC, Kaia, and Polygon.
[How to attempt recovery when XDC is sent to an EVM-based address]
To recover mistakenly sent funds, you need to add an XDC account using the same address format as EVM networks. This can be done using the Custom Path account feature.
Please follow the steps below:
- In the D’CENT app, go to [Settings > Laboratory] and enable "Custom Path Account"
- Go to the My Wallet tab and tap “+ Add Account”
- Search for “XDC” and select “XDC ('60)” to add the account
- The account “XDC-CUSTOM-01” will be added to the My Wallet tab
- Check whether the mistakenly sent XDC balance is displayed correctly
- Transfer all recovered XDC to your original XDC account (XDC-01), then disable the Custom Path Account setting in [Settings > Laboratory]
[Important Notes]
- The Custom Path account is an advanced feature intended for recovery purposes such as mis-sent transactions.
- Incorrect settings or transfers may result in loss of assets, and the responsibility lies with the user.
- If the withdrawal was made from an exchange using an incorrect network or address, recovery may not be possible in the D’CENT Wallet. Please also check with the exchange’s customer support.
