I can't enter or verify recovery words on DCENT X.

[Recovery word verification keeps failing.]​

On the verification screen shown after the wallet is created, you must choose - from the 3 words on screen - the word that matches the position in the list you wrote down.

Things to check

  • Check that the order you wrote down is correct. For example, if word 1 is abandon, you must select abandon on the screen.
  • Check whether the order slipped or a line was skipped while you were writing the words down.
  • You may have confused words with similar spelling. (e.g. u / v, l / i, h / n / m)

Cautions

  • Once you have viewed the mnemonic you cannot view or retrieve it again. After that, only the mnemonic verification feature - which checks whether the words you wrote down are correct - remains available.
  • If your notes are wrong you cannot pass the verification, so please make sure your R3covery Card backup has been completed.

[A recovery word is reported as invalid or not in the list.]​

The recovery words (mnemonic code) of a DCENT wallet are chosen at random from the 2,048 English words in the BIP39 technical standard list.

In other words, every word shown on the screen is generated according to the BIP39 standard, so it cannot be an invalid word or a word missing from the list.

Things to check

  1. Check the spelling of the words you wrote down once more. Recovery words consist only of lowercase letters, and similar-looking letters are easy to confuse. e.g. u / v , l / i , h / n / m
  2. Even if the spelling looks right, the word may be a similar word that is not in the BIP39 standard word list. View the full BIP39 word list
  3. Recovery words must be entered in the exact order. Please also check whether the order slipped or a word was entered in the wrong position.
  4. Check that you selected the correct number of words. A wallet created on DCENT uses 24 words. (The 12 and 18 word options are for restoring a mnemonic created in another wallet.)

Cautions

  • DCENT is a non-custodial wallet and does not store your recovery words or private key on any server.
  • Therefore, if you lose your recovery words or they do not match, not even the wallet company can restore them for you.

These are the three situations we are asked about most often on the recovery word entry screen.

The word is not confirmed

  • Once you type two or more letters, suggestion chips appear and you have to tap a suggestion chip yourself to confirm the word. Even when only one suggestion is left, it is not confirmed automatically.
  • When a word is confirmed, the counter at the top (N/24) increases.

Keys are gray and cannot be pressed

  • Keys that cannot start any word matching the letters you have typed so far are grayed out and disabled. This is normal behavior.
  • If a key does not respond, you most likely mistyped an earlier letter. Delete it with the delete icon on the left and type it again.

Letters are not entered as intended

  • Several letters share one key, so pressing the same key repeatedly cycles through them. (abc key: a → b → c)
  • An unconfirmed letter has a blinking underscore and is confirmed automatically after 2 seconds. Press the right arrow on the input row to confirm it immediately.
